Loggers place, set new records at state

The Libby High School track and field team didn’t have a lot of high placers at the State Class A Track Meet last weekend, but there was still a lot accomplished by the Loggers.

Sophomore Jay Beagle pulled up third in the 400 meter dash with a new personal record of 49.97 seconds. He also had a personal best in the 100 meter dash with 11.15 seconds.

Libby Head Coach Jim May said by email that this was the first time Beagle has broken 50 seconds in the 400. It is also the third fastest 400 meter dash time in Libby High School history.

Beagle’s 200 meter dash time also put him seventh in school history, beating his previous placing in the school records, where he was at tenth place with 11.41 seconds.

Seniors Bella Hollingsworth and Emma Gruber were hundredths of a second apart as they placed in the 100 meter hurdles, Hollingsworth with 16.77 seconds for sixth place and Gruber with 16.47 seconds for fourth place.

“These two girls have been training together and competing next to each other for four years, so it was a fitting end to their careers,” May said.

Gruber also placed fifth in the 300 meter hurdles with 49.06 seconds, a season record for Gruber.

Junior Keith Johnson had his first state medal, placing sixth in the high jump with a 5-foot, 10-inch jump. Johnson followed on Saturday with a 41-foot, 6.25-inch triple jump, taking sixth place and setting a new personal record.

May said the Loggers had a lot of excellent performances.

Junior John Cheroske had a personal best in the 800 meter run with 2:02.86.

In the 400 meter dash, sophomore Olivia Gilliam-Smith placed ninth and had a personal record of 1:02.59.

Senior Zoie Spady set a new personal record in the shot put with a 34-foot, 2.5-inch throw.
